Julie H. Sloane

VIRGINIA BEACH - Julie Sophia Hedberg Sloane, 43, of the 900 block of Sir Wilfred Circle, passed away Sept. 23, 2003.  Julie was born in Concord, Calif. on Aug. 10, 1960.  She grew up in Orinda, Calif and attended Miramonte High School where she excelled academically.

An award-winning cross-country runner, she later went on to compete in marathons.  Julie was a graduate of the University of California at Santa Barbara where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and Old Dominion University where she received her master’s degree in education.  A strong advocate for children with learning disabilities, Julie worked with many local families as an education specialist.

Julie and her family lived for many years in Hawaii where she was a biology teacher at St. Louis High School.  While living in Hawaii, she was an active member of the Junior League and a volunteer that coordinated programs for teenage mothers.  As an active member of King’s Grant Presbyterian Church, she taught Sunday school and energetically led the youth group.  For many years, Julie brought joy and smiles to the young members of her Girl Scout troop.  More than anything else, Julie loved her daughters and treasured their gifts.  Compassionate, intelligent, fun-loving and vibrant, Julie brought energy into every room she entered.  She was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her husband, David I. Sloane; daughters, Krystina Robin Sloane and Hillary Sally Sloane of Virginia Beach; parents, Leonard and Sally Hedberg; sisters, Jenny Maguire and Linda Kirkwood of California.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at King’s Grant Presbyterian Church with the Rev. J.S. Harris officiating.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Bipolar Research Foundation.  The Cremation Society of Virginia, Virginia Beach, is in charge of arrangements.  Friends may sign the online guest register for Mrs. Sloane at www.cremate.org.

Your generous spirit, and giving heart followed you through all of your days... no surprise there!
